Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazlum Abdi, on Thursday night to discuss the political and security situation in Syria, with a strong focus on securing the rights of the Kurdish people.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the meeting addressed the latest developments in Syria, the relationship between the SDF and Kurdish political parties, and their engagement with the Syrian government. Both leaders exchanged views on counterterrorism efforts and the ongoing threat posed by ISIS.
The two sides emphasized the need for meaningful participation of Kurds and all Syrian communities in the governance and power structure of Syria. They agreed on the importance of ensuring the rights of all components of the country and pledged joint efforts to promote peace, stability, and security.
The discussion also highlighted the necessity of unity among Kurdish forces and parties in Syria as a key factor in achieving Kurdish demands and rights. Other topics included the humanitarian situation in al-Hol Camp and the role of the international coalition in the continued fight against ISIS.
