Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced that the installation of speed cameras across the Kurdistan Region has led to a dramatic reduction in road accidents and fatalities.
Speaking at the launch of the Safety Guide by the Ministry of Interior, Barzani praised the initiative as a major step toward protecting lives and improving public safety. He highlighted that where the project has been fully implemented, traffic accidents dropped by 50 percent within a year, while deaths and serious injuries fell by more than 60 percent.
“The Ministry of Interior has started implementing the speed camera system with a clear strategy. This project has not only saved lives but also prevented significant financial losses previously caused by road accidents,” Barzani said.
He added that the reduction in accidents has eased the financial burden on citizens and the government alike. Traffic accidents used to cause huge damages, not only to families but also to public infrastructure and government projects, "These losses have now been significantly reduced,” he noted.
The prime minister underlined the government’s commitment to expanding the program to cover more areas across the Kurdistan Region, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility between the authorities and the public.
Road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in the region, often linked to speeding and reckless driving. Officials hope that stricter enforcement and public awareness efforts will further improve traffic safety in the coming years.
